“Fall” in Love with You: Falling Leaves and Letting Go

There’s something about fall that reminds us how beautiful letting go can be.

The trees don’t cling to their leaves out of fear of being bare. They trust that in releasing what once served them, they create space for new life. What if we approached our emotional healing in the same way — with the quiet courage to let go of what no longer aligns with who we’re becoming?

The Dreams We Built as Children

When I was little, I used to play Barbies on the front deck of my childhood home. Barbie was beautiful, and Ken was the dream. They had gorgeous clothes, perfect hair, and the kind of love that seemed so pure and simple. They built a beautiful home together, took care of their horse named Dallas, and drove off in their shiny dream car for vacations and date nights. Life was good.

Those games became my picture of what adulthood should look like — the image I carried of what “happiness” was supposed to be. I couldn’t wait to grow up and have it all.

But I wasn’t Barbie. I was an awkward girl raised by a mom who stretched her money as far as she could. I lived in a trailer, not a dream home. Finding my Ken didn’t come as easily as Barbie’s storyline promised. I spent years trying new haircuts to feel pretty and going on constant diets to make my body thin enough to fit that ideal.

My childhood was good — filled with love and resilience — but the image in my head was far from the truth I lived. Letting go of that “Barbie dream” was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. It meant redefining what love, beauty, and success actually looked like for me.

The Beliefs We Were Taught to Hold

We all carry mental pictures like that — images and ideals that quietly shape how we see ourselves. Maybe it’s the white picket fence, the perfect marriage, the fit body, or the polished career. Somewhere along the way, we learn to measure our worth against those standards.

But these are not truths. They are stories — stories we absorbed before we even knew we could question them.

Like the leaves on the trees, there comes a time when these beliefs have to fall away. Holding onto them too tightly only blocks the new growth waiting underneath.

Letting Go of the Image That Isn’t You

Letting go begins when we ask, “Whose image am I living out?”
Was it a parent’s dream? Society’s mold? A younger version of you trying to feel safe and accepted?

This isn’t about blame — it’s about compassion. It’s about looking at the images we once clung to and thanking them for what they gave us — the hope, the structure, the drive — before gently releasing them back to the wind.

Letting go doesn’t mean giving up. It means allowing truth to replace illusion.

Creating Space for New Truths

Once you release what’s false, you begin to notice what’s real.

Instead of “I must be perfect to be loved,” try “I am learning to love myself through every season of growth.”
Instead of “I have to do everything alone,” try “I am open to support and divine alignment.”

You’re not just rewriting thoughts — you’re replanting truth.
Healing isn’t about pretending the past never existed. It’s about harvesting the wisdom it left behind and preparing the soil for something new.

Reflection Questions

  • What childhood ideals still shape how you see yourself today?

  • Where in your life are you still trying to live up to someone else’s picture of happiness?

  • What new truths are ready to take root within you?

A Gentle Reminder

Like the trees in fall, you were never meant to stay the same.
Each leaf that falls represents a story, belief, or expectation you no longer need.
Let it go. Trust the bare branches. Because underneath it all, something sacred and beautiful is waiting to grow.
