Facing What Follows You
By now, we’ve let the old leaves fall and walked through the haunted rooms of our hearts.
But what about the things that follow us — even after the house feels clean?
The ghosts of fear.
The goblins of negative self-talk.
The shadows that quietly influence our choices, even when we think we’ve moved on.
This week, we’re turning on the light and facing what still lingers in the dark.
The Ghosts: Echoes of Fear 👻
Ghosts are the fears that hover just out of sight — the ones that whisper,
“What if you fail?”
“What if they leave?”
“What if you’re not enough?”
They show up when you step toward something new — a dream, a relationship, a version of you that no longer fits the past.
But here’s the truth:
Most ghosts only have the power you give them.
They’re not real threats; they’re memories of old pain that rise up to test whether you’ll choose fear or freedom this time.
When you feel that familiar chill of self-doubt or hesitation, pause.
Breathe.
Ask yourself: “Is this real, or is this just a ghost from my past?”
Naming it loosens its grip.
The Goblins: Negative Self-Talk 👺
Goblins are tricksters. They show up in your mind disguised as truth —
“You’ll never get it right.”
“You’re too much.”
“Who do you think you are?”
They feed on comparison, perfectionism, and old conditioning.
But the best way to disarm a goblin isn’t to fight it — it’s to starve it of attention.
When you notice harsh self-talk creeping in, meet it with compassion and truth:
“That’s an old story. I’m not playing that game anymore.”
You can even add humor — “Nice try, little goblin. Not today.” 😉
Lightness disarms heaviness every time.
The Shadows: What You’ve Repressed 🌑
And then there are the shadows — the parts of you you’ve hidden because they felt unacceptable, embarrassing, or too intense.
Your anger. Your jealousy. Your desire. Your need to be seen.
Psychologist Carl Jung said,
“The best political, social, and spiritual work we can do is to withdraw the projection of our shadow onto others.”
When you project your shadow, you see in others what you haven’t yet faced in yourself. You might criticize someone’s confidence because deep down, you’ve been taught to dim your own light.
But when you turn inward and meet your shadow with love, something incredible happens —
the judgment softens, the envy fades, and the light expands.
You begin to fall in love with all of you, not just the parts you show the world.
Reflection Questions 💭
-
What fears (ghosts) keep resurfacing when I try something new?
-
What negative thoughts (goblins) still sneak in when I look in the mirror or take a risk?
-
What traits in others trigger me — and what might that reveal about my own shadow?
A Gentle Reminder
The goal isn’t to banish your ghosts, goblins, and shadows — it’s to understand them.
They’re not here to torment you; they’re here to teach you where love still needs to land.
When you can meet even your darkest parts with light, you become whole.
And that, my friend, is what it truly means to fall in love with you. 💛
